Our Approach

We are widely acknowledged as a healthcare security leader in patient and family-centered care. In fact, the International Association of Healthcare Security and Safety twice has awarded Michigan Medicine Security the Lindberg Bell Award for demonstrated excellence.

What does this mean for you? You can expect that our officers and support staff are highly trained healthcare security professionals equipped to serve all members of our community and help you conveniently and safely visit our health system.

Along with all of DPSS, we work to prevent harm against persons, protect assets, ensure compliance, improve the quality of life, and enhance workforce and organizational development. Michigan Medicine Security is dedicated to protecting the health system with professionalism and innovation, promoting the values of caring, innovation, integrity and teamwork.

MMS officers and support staff are highly trained healthcare security professionals equipped to serve all members of our community and help you have a safe experience in the health system. Our comprehensive safety program includes our DPSS colleagues in the University Police Department and Guest Services Department. Together, we work with our clinical partners to continually assess our strategy, prevent workplace violence, adapt to our community’s changing needs, and balance safety with a welcoming experience for our patients and guests.

Our Units

MMS Operations Engagement & Investigations Unit (EIU)

EIU investigators process incident reports and conduct investigations into safety and security-related incidents that affect Michigan Medicine.

The EIU partners with the University Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit, Patient Relations & Clinical Risk, Human Resources, and the Office of General Counsel as necessary to ensure that appropriate actions are taken to support and protect our community.

MMS Operations K-9 Unit

One of our goals at DPSS MMS Operations is to provide a positive and memorable hospital visit while protecting our community. Our K-9s are dual-trained in explosives detection and community engagement. A visit from our K-9s helps many people feel less stressed and anxious, leading to a safer and peaceful environment for care.

Patient Property & Lost & Found

When preparing for your hospital visit, we recommend that you pack light. Think about it like flying- no dangerous items, and try to keep it to one “carry-on” only! The hospital will have pillows, blankets, a patient gown, and basic toiletries for your use.

Storage space is very limited in patient rooms. We strongly urge staff and patients to work together in order to send home all patient property that isn’t necessary for medical care.

It is important to leave the following items at home:

  • Please leave all medications and supplements at home, unless directed by your doctor.
  • Remove all jewelry items and leave them at home.
  • Leave all marijuana and CBD products (oil, vapes, gummies, etc) at home- DPSS is not permitted to store these items, and they will be disposed of.
  • Although they may be a comfort to you, leave sentimental items at home- faith items and irreplaceable handmade items may be lost.

When the patient is unable to make arrangements to send their valuables home with a friend or family member, MMS will secure patient valuables.

All patient property turned over to DPSS for safe storage is inventoried, itemized and documented-

  • Perishable food items will be disposed of.
  • Cash will be counted and stored in a separate safe as the rest of your belongings.
  • Weapons and illegal items are turned over to University Police.

MMS will turn over property to the patient or next of kin only—please be prepared to show identification.
