Advisory Information

Fires Reported Near Nichols Arboretum Under Investigation

The University of Michigan Police Department, in coordination with Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Fire Safety, is investigating four fires reported near Nichols Arboretum.

The incidents were reported during the daytime hours between June 1-9. The first three fires were located near the railroad tracks along the Huron River. A fourth fire occurred in a field area closer to the valley.

No injuries have been reported, and the fires were extinguished before causing significant damage.

Fire Safety Reminder

As temperatures rise and vegetation becomes drier, even small ignition sources can quickly ignite a grass or brush fire. The University of Michigan is a smoke-free campus. Community members are reminded to:

  • Avoid using open flames, matches, lighters, or other ignition sources in areas with dry grass, leaves, or brush.
  • Properly extinguish and dispose of any combustible materials in approved receptacles.
  • Immediately report any signs of fire, smoke, or suspicious activity.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the University of Michigan Police Department at 734-763-1131 or submit information anonymously through the DPSS Anonymous Tip Line at (800) 863-1355.

Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available.
